Northwest Minnesota Historical Center Collection Guide

The Guide consists of brief descriptions of each manuscript collection at the Center. Most entries have a link to a more detailed inventory.

In addition to this alphabetical list, these collections are also searchable through our Library catalog. AABYE STORE, PERLEY, MN. RECORDS, 1890-1906. 10 in. S2778
Mr. Andrew Aabye founded the Aabye Store in 1880. His general store was one of the first buildings in Perley, MN. Records include photographs, news clippings, and day books.

ADA COOPERATIVE CREAMERY. RECORDS, 1920-1956. S856
The Ada Cooperative Creamery, Ada, Minnesota, was established in 1920 to meet the needs of the dairy farmers in Norman County. This collection consists of volumes and loose papers, all in good condition.

ADAMS, JOSHUA EDWIN. PAPERS, 1933-1955. 2.5 in. S2795
Mr. Adams, born in 1851, practiced law and was active in the governmental activities in Moorhead. His papers include three suits, three estate cases, and three land abstracts for land annexes to the city of Moorhead.

AGASSIZ WOMEN'S POLITICAL CAUCUS. RECORDS, 1982- . 1.75 ft. S2734
The AWPC is a nonpartisan political organization whose primary purpose is to educate women in political activities and to recruit, support, and endorse qualified women to run for elective offices. Records include by-laws, newsletters, correspondence, organizational literature, program brochures, and three scrapbooks.

ALBJERG, VICTOR L. AUTOBIOGRAPHY, 1892-1973. 1 vol. .05 in. S2657 (small collection)
The manuscript deals chiefly with Albjerg's education as a historian and the teaching positions he held in Minnesota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. He taught at Moorhead State Teachers College, Norbert College, and Purdue University.

Altrusa Club members represent executive, business, and professional women organized in order to promote common interests as well as civic and national understanding and betterment. Records include minutes, newsletters, reports, and correspondence.

Records include Board of Director lists and meeting minutes, by-laws, standing committees, committee reports, and treasurer's reports.

AMERICAN CRYSTAL SUGAR COMPANY. SUGAR BEET RESEARCH FILES, 1930-. 6 ft. S5037
This collection consists of numerous research publications concerning sugarbeet cultivation, which were organized in the 1950s at the Colorado research facility, and numbered, 1 thru 1318. The remainder of the collection consists of several hundred photographs of sugarbeet fields, test plots, beet equipment, research slides, and plant operations in various parts of the upper Midwest and western United States. In addition, there is a set of charts that show the extent of sugarbeet acreage in various parts of the American Crystal company’s growing areas plus newsletters.

AN AMERICAN COMMUNIST: KARL EMIL NYGARD. MASTERS THESIS, 2000. .25 in. S5035 (small collection)
This thesis by Pamela Brunfelt is the story of Karl Emil Nygard who was elected mayor of Crosby, Minnesota in 1932. At that time he was the only communist elected to an executive level office in the United States.

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY OF MINNESOTA, NINTH DISTRICT. RECORDS, 1928-1947. 2 in. S230
This women's patriotic organization promotes Americanism, community service, national defense, and child welfare. Records consist of meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, programs of district and state conventions, reports, and one scrapbook.

THE AMPHION CHORUS OF FARGO-MOORHEAD. RECORDS, 1930-1952. 2.5 in. S2752
The Amphion Chorus was a one-hundred member male chorus that was heralded as the "Men of the West on Wings of Song". The records include concert schedules, programs, newspaper clippings, and snapshots of the chorus members on tour.

Minnesota state legislator (1949-1953) from New York Mills in Otter Tail County. Correspondence, bills, and related legislative materials are included in his papers.

The Andersons farmed in the Hitterdal area. The farm records include income tax copies, purchase statements, and detailed farm account ledgers.

THE BAKERS-CENTER FOR WOMEN. RECORDS, 1976-1983. 1.25 ft. S2746
The Center was organized in Fargo in 1976 to provide support groups, a place for women to meet, educational projects, and referral services for women. The records include correspondence, financial records, membership lists, newsletters, programs, and resource material.

BASFORD, HARRY. PAPERS, 1948-1973. S245
Harry Basford was elected to his first term in the legislature in 1949 and was defeated by Frank DeGroat of Lake Park in 1962. Papers from the Grass Root Funds for Farmers are also included in this collection.

BEAUCHAMP, DAVID J. (1940- ). PAPERS, 1975-1978. 2.5 ft. S2671
Mr. Beauchamp is a North Dakota native. From 1969-1974 he was a staff member at Moorhead State University. From 1974-1978 he served in the Minnesota State Legislature for Clay County. The collection consists of the papers he gathered during his years in public office.

BERGESON, BURNETT J. PAPERS, 1953-1962. S846
Burnett Bergeson was born in 1915, graduated from the Northwest School of Agriculture at Crookston, Minnesota, and subsequently worked for six years with the State Department of Agriculture. The collection consists of acts, bills, correspondence, legislative reports, newspaper clippings, news releases, and proposals.

BERTEL, BIRGER L. (1886-1963). MANUSCRIPT. .25 in. S2629 (small collection)
Birger L. Bertel wrote a reminiscence of his childhood in Nebraska and the family move to Pillager, Minnesota in 1900. He describes work with threshing crews harvesting wheat in North Dakota. Bertel moved to Fargo in 1908 and wrote about his employment at the Union Transfer Company and finally his purchase of the company. The manuscript is titled "Things Remembered."

BJORNAAS, HAAKON. PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION 1907-1925. 3 ft. S4852
A major collection of 1100 photographic prints and 450 glass negatives. Most of the photographs were taken by Haakon Bjornaas (1884-1949), a traveling photographer. The collection includes numerous prints of communities and sites in northwest Minnesota, including Fergus Falls, Baudette, Cook, Tower, White Earth, Roosevelt, and other towns in the early years of the 20th century. A number of prints of North Dakota communities are also in the collection. Selected images from this collection can be viewed at the Minnesota Digital Library website.

Collection of locally published magazines containing community information on the Fargo-Moorhead area. The Binford Guide was published by Moorhead resident Howard Binford from 1971 until his death in 1989.

Minnesota state legislator (1939-1947) from Detroit Lakes in Becker County. Correspondence, clippings, campaign material, and related legislative files are included.

BREWSTER, CHARLES. DIARY, 1854-1859. 1 roll of microfilm. S5014.
Brief entries regarding Brewster's work as surveyor for the Boston and New York Central Railroad (1854) and for the Illinois Central Railroad (1855); his settlement in Sibley County, Minnesota (1856) and construction of a log cabin on his claim; steamboat travels on the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers; social and pioneer life in Sibley County (Minn.). and in Illinois; and social life, church attendance, and trips to other New England towns and cities while in Portsmouth, New Hampshire (1857), and in Boston, Massachusetts, where he opened a store in 1859. Newsletters of Company 2705 of the Civilian Conservation Corps, which operated nearly Bagley, Minnesota. The Center’s copies are photocopies from the mimeographed originals that are preserved at the Bagley Public Library.

This collection consists of two volumes of memoirs by the Burrill family in which one volume discusses early farming near Hawley, Minnesota.

BYSTROM FAMILY PAPERS. LETTERS. .25 in. S5027 (small collection)
Two letters from the Bystrom family. A 1918 letter is promoting the campaign for Governor Burnquist. A letter dated 1945 relates weather conditions, crop information, and low prices for the summer of 1945.

This collection is an unpublished manuscript history of Roseau County, Minnesota. It consists of notes, research film, news clippings, and other related materials collected by Earl Chapin, a newspaperman and historian from Roseau.

CHRISTIANSON, DONNA ANDRAE. (1931- ). PAPERS, 1969. .5 ft. S266
Minnesota state legislator (1969) from Halstad in Norman County, appointed to fill out the term of her husband, Marvin E. Christianson, who died in office. Correspondence, photographs, and clippings are included.

CHRISTIANSON, MARVIN E. (1928-1969). PAPERS, 1964-1969. .5 ft. S265
Minnesota state legislator from Halstad in Norman County. Elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1965 from Legislative District 65, he served in 1967 from District 66a. Mr. Christianson died while in office and was replaced by his wife, Donna Christianson. The collection contains correspondence, campaign materials, and clippings.

CHRISTIANSON, ORVILLE AND GERTRUDE, FARM and FAMILY PAPERS. (1941-1992). 3 ft. S5085
Records of the Christianson Farm and family in Hickory Township, southeast Pennington County, which remained in the hands of the family for more than nine decades. The farm was cultivated in small grains and maintained herds of dairy and beef cattle.

Copy of senior thesis by Moorhead State Teachers College student John J. Brula, describing the physical geography and climate of Clay County. A small section also describes early county agriculture.

CLAY COUNTY AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION OFFICE. ANNUAL REPORTS, 1914-1950. 3 ft. S4972
Established in Clay County in 1913, the Clay County Agricultural Extension Office existed until 1922, when funding for it was cut. The office reopened in 1934. The annual reports for the office thus run from 1914 to 1922, then each year from 1934. The reports contain summaries of the agricultural agent’s work with county farmers. Reports by the county 4-H agent are also appended to the agent’s summaries. Originals of these reports are filed in the Clay County Courthouse, County Extension Office.

The records include campaign material, DFL constitution, meeting minutes, press releases, and DFL convention material.

CLAY COUNTY DISTRICT COURT. NATURALIZATION RECORDS, 1872-1954. 8 reels of microfilm. S4859
Record books from the Clay County Courthouse, recording naturalization information from 1872 to 1954 including: Declaration of Intention and petitions for citizenship by immigrants living in Clay County; applications to take the Oath of Allegiance to the U.S.; copies of Final Citizenship Papers. The books are indexed in a general index volume, arranged by family name. The record books were microfilmed by the Minnesota Historical Society.

This collection contains the calendar of cases for the November general term of 1882, Clay County, 11th Judicial District Court. Included are civil cases, appeal cases, and criminal cases.

Plat books and atlases showing the ownership of tracts of land in Clay County for various years. Plats are arraigned in order by township, and the volumes include various useful statistics and other information about the county, as well as family and farm photos.

This collection contains policy manuals, planning reports, and the annual report for 1977.

This was a community service project completed by the Historical Center for the City of Moorhead. The volumes of tax lists (1872-1955) are for the towns and townships of Clay County. Included are: Alliance, Barnesville, Barnesville Village, Comstock, Cromwell, Dilworth, Eglon, Elkton, Elmwood, Felton, Felton Village, Flowing, Georgetown, Georgetown Village, Glyndon, Goose Prairie, Hagen, Hawley, Hawley Village, Highland Grove, Hitterdal, Holy Cross, Humboldt, Keene, Kent, Kurtz, Moland, Morken, Moorhead, Oakport, Parke, Riverton, Sabin, Skree, Spring Prairie, Tansem, Ulen, Ulen Village, Viding. Public records of a variety of Moorhead and Clay County government and social service agencies including the Clay County Board of Commissioners, Clay County Planning Commission, Moorhead City Council, Moorhead Public Library Board, Clay-Wilkin Opportunity Council, and Buffalo-Red River Watershed District. Records include agendas, minutes and annual reports. Collection is periodically updated by the transfer of records from the Moorhead Public Library to this Center.

COMSTOCK, SOLOMON G. (1842-1933). PAPERS, 1872-1939. 35 ft. S248
Solomon G. Comstock was a pioneer Moorhead resident, arriving in 1871. He was the first county attorney for Clay County and held similar posts in Pembina and Stutsman Counties in Dakota Territory. He was elected to the state legislature in 1875 and served until 1888. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1888 and served until 1891. He was president of the Northwest Land Co. (1883-1914) and worked closely with James J. Hill plotting townships in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana. He was also actively involved in several Valley enterprises and helped establish a state normal school in Moorhead, now Moorhead State University.

COMSTOCK HOUSE. CORRESPONDENCE AND FAMILY EPHEMERA, 1891-1975. 6 ft. S5055
Materials kept at the Comstock House state historic site in Moorhead, containing correspondence of the Comstock family, including letters written by Solomon Comstock, his wife Sarah, his son George and daughter Ada, various postcards received by the Comstock family, magazines from the early 19th century that mention the Comstocks, and a set of maps of various towns in North Dakota in which the Comstock family had investments. Also contains twelve taped interviews conducted in the 1970s with people who knew members of the Comstock family.

John Corbid was elected to the Minnesota Legislature from District 1B in 1974 and served in the Legislature until 1980. The John Corbid collection consists of material he accumulated while a State Legislator including correspondence with constituents, other legislators and lobbyists. Also included are press releases, reports and newspaper articles.

The Daughters of Prairie View Pioneers was organized in 1942 so that daughters of pioneers who settled in Prairie View Township could meet and reminisce about the past. Included in the records are family histories and "American Letters", a collection of letters to John Holt from his family and friends in Norway.

DAUNER, MARVIN. PAPERS, 1974-1986. 2 ft. S4812
Records of Mr. Dauner during his terms as a member of the Clay County Board of Commissioners. The materials include some personal correspondence, and official records of Clay County's Planning Commission, the Housing Authority, the Highway Board, and the Welfare Board. A number of special reports and studies on land use, water quality and social services of Clay County are also included.

DeGROAT, FRANK H. (1916-1989). PAPERS, 1963-1975. 4.25 ft. S716
Minnesota State Legislator (1962-1976) from Lake Park in Becker County. The collection contains clippings, reports, genealogical information, Indian Affairs Commission files, and other related legislative files.

DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY, MOORHEAD CHAPTER. RECORDS, 1942- . 2 ft. 3 in. S2717
The purpose of this society is to unite women educators and to advance the professional interests and positions of women in education. Records include annual chapter reports, by-laws, constitution, financial reports, minutes, chapter reports, and three scrapbooks.

DETROIT LAKES, MINNESOTA. RECORDS, 1873-1903. 1 vol. 1 in. S2641
This volume is titled Town Clerk's Record. It contains a record of the proceedings of town meetings and of the Board of Supervisors from January 15, 1873 to March 1, 1881. It also lists the elected officers, records town orders issued, and serves as a register of claims and bonds allowed by the board of audit.

DISTRICT 23 SCHOOL MASTER'S CLUB. RECORDS, 1929-1972. 5 in. S2688
This club was formed in Moorhead in 1929 with the purpose of creating a club for male teachers and school administrators. The club structure was very informal with no written constitution. The records include correspondence and minutes of the club.

DRAHMANN GENERAL MERCHANDISE STORE. RECORDS, 1877-1925. 4 ft. S2648
The records consist of ledgers from 1901-1908 and a few business letters from 1877-1925. The Drahmann store started business near Rush Lake, Minnesota in 1876, but later moved to Perham probably to take advantage of the Northern Pacific railroad.

Mr. Eagan, a professor of history at Moorhead State University, was active in the local DFL party. This collection contains materials dealing with local and state campaigns as well as pro-life literature and action.

Clarence Evenson, Moorhead, Minnesota was a state representative for the years 1959-1962, representing the 49th District. This collection contains bills, correspondence, newspaper clippings, tax information and miscellaneous materials from when he was a representative

EVENSON, MARVIN A. PAPERS, 1952-1970. 4.5 ft. S5066
Marvin A. Evenson served as a party organizer for the Democratic Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party in a number of capacities for the 7th and 9th Districts located in northwest Minnesota. Papers consist largely of DFL candidate files.

FAIRMONT FOODS, INC., MOORHEAD, MINNESOTA. RECORDS, 1924-1982. 20 ft. S2691
This collection is made up of ledgers, correspondence, internal records, and other written reports of the Fairmont Foods Creamery in Moorhead from its opening in 1924 to its closure in 1980. Part of the creamery building was razed in 1981-1982, and the original was renovated for senior citizen housing.

FAMILY BUDGET RECORDS. RECORD BOOKS, 1941-1980. 1 ft. S4928
Forty annual budget books, detailing one family’s expenditures and income over the course of each year. These books, donated by a family that wishes to remain anonymous, provide an unusually detailed record of the finances of one family over a forty year period.

FAMILY SERVICE ASSOCIATION OF FARGO-MOORHEAD. RECORDS, 1959-1972. .20 ft. S896
Board minutes, correspondence, annual reports and self-written histories of the association are contained in this collection.

FARGO-MOORHEAD AND WORLD WAR II. ORAL HISTORIES. 1 ft. S4952
Transcriptions of 33 interviews conducted between 1988 and 1994 with Fargo and Moorhead residents concerning the "home front" in this area during the Second World War. The transcripts range in size from 30 to 60 pages, and cassette tapes of the interviews are also preserved. Several interviews are of war refugees and former displaced persons who relocated to the Red River Valley region after the war. These interviews were made as part of a projected history of the war years in the Valley.

This collection contains miscellaneous papers concerning anti-war protests in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Included are newsletters, handbills and flyers, underground newspapers, photographs, and news clippings. Topics include draft resistance, the anti-ballistic missile protest movement, Kent State protests, and FBI surveillance of anti-war activists.

FARGO-MOORHEAD COMMUNITY SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES. RECORDS, 1965-1982. 2 ft. S4811.
This collection contains minutes, correspondence, budgets, news clippings and other records of and about several community social service agencies, including the Center for Parents and Children, the Clay County Youth Council, the United Fund, the United Way, and the F-M Communiversity.

FARGO-MOORHEAD HERITAGE AND CULTURAL BRIDGE. RECORDS, 1976. 1 in. S4816
Proposals and draft plans for a museum of Fargo and Moorhead history, intended as a joint venture, but never built. Additional files containing the initial plans for the Heritage-Hjemkomst Center of Moorhead are also included in this collection.

FARGO-MOORHEAD HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. PAPERS, 1976-. 1.5 ft. S5068
Materials in this collection consists of budgets, bylaws and constitution, correspondence, minutes, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, and a scrapbook. Materials from other area horticultural societies are also included in collection.

FARMER’S POCKET LEDGER. LEDGER BOOK, ca. 1924. S4932 (small collection)
One small pocket ledger, often given to farmers free by the John Deere implement company. This particular ledger was the property of a Newfolden, Minnesota, farmer who recorded in it routine farm expenses over a period of one year (probably 1924).

FELDE, EVA. SCRAPBOOKS, 1950-1961. 2 ft. S4979
Seven scrapbooks kept by Eva Felde, documenting the years she taught the children of American personnel in overseas military and government installations, in Germany and Japan. The scrapbooks contain correspondence and pamphlets about the classes she taught and the areas where she taught.

FERGUS FALLS STATE BANK. RECORDS, 1917-1921. 1 vol. S2674
This collection consists of one volume which lists loans that the bank gave from 1917 to 1921.

FIELD, INDUNA BERTEL. MANUSCRIPTS. 2.5 in. S2628 (small collection)
Mrs. Field's reminiscence, "The Influence of a Swedish Settler", consists of her reflections on the life of her father, Andrew Gustaf Bertel (1861-1934). Bertel was born in Sweden and came to the U.S. in 1877.

This church was organized in Detroit Lakes by the Reverend Hiram N. Gates in 1872. Colonel George M. Johnston donated the land on which a church was built in 1873. The collection contains historical information, correspondence, legal and financial information, minutes of meetings, data regarding members, and records of auxiliary organizations.

The church was organized in 1872 as the Church of Glyndon, Minnesota. In 1921 the name was changed to the First Congregational. The records on microfilm include vital statistics, a treasurer's report book, and minutes of auxiliary organizations.

This collection consists of papers kept by Richard Fitzsimons while serving in the Minnesota House of Representatives and Senate. It contains mostly correspondence and background materials provided by the legislative research staff and lobbyists. Included in this collection is a Minnesota Historical Society educational packet entitled “What is a Legislator?” using Senator Fitzsimons as the model.

A small collection of photographs and sketch maps of Glyndon Farms, located just east of Moorhead in Clay County. The sketch maps show the layout of various crops on the land from 1919 to 1987. This collection is supplemented by an interview conducted in 1989 with Donald Grant, primary shareholder of Glyndon Farms. The interview is transcribed.

GRASSICK, JAMES. LETTERS, 1927-1943. .25 in. S4958.
A physician in Buxton, and later Grand Forks, North Dakota, James Grassick composed these Christmas season letters from 1927 to 1943. Each letter recounts experiences from his career in medicine, including an account of a typhoid epidemic in 1892. He entitled these reminiscences "Letters of a Pioneer Physician," and sent them to friends and acquaintances over a 16 year period.

These papers consist of Hagen’s political and personal correspondence, and numerous files from George Hagen’s law practice. In addition, there are political files on the Polk County issues, the Farmer-Labor Party, sessions and legislative activities of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and documents from Hagen’s campaigns for office.

Olaf J. Hagen (1872-1965) moved with his family to the Red River Valley in 1873. Dr. Hagen was County Superintendent of School in Richland County from 1898-1902. He then continued his education in the study of medicine. Dr. Hagen began practicing in Moorhead and was a founder of the Fargo Clinic in 1919. He was Resident Director of Moorhead State Teachers College from 1923-1931. He also served as regent on the University of Minnesota Board from 1931-1937. His papers include speeches, correspondence, photos, awards, diplomas, and fragmentary autobiographies.

Also included are papers concerning the lives of two of Dr. Hagen’s children, John (1917-1980) and Harriet Hagen Geib (1913-2005). The John Hagen papers are almost entirely letters written by John to his father while John served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945.These letters describe his experiences as both an infantryman in the Pacific and as an Army Air Force pilot in Italy.The papers of Harriet Hagen Geib deal with her life and family in Moorhead from 1946 to 2005.A considerable number of these papers document the medical career of her husband Marvin Geib, who was one of the founders of The Neuropsychiatric Institute in Fargo, North Dakota.There is also a small file of letters and documents concerning the death of James Hagen, Harriet’s and John’s brother, who was killed in action while serving in the Army Air Force, 1944.

The Learning Bank was a clearinghouse for education designed to make the best use of the Fargo-Moorhead community’s resources for learning through sharing. The Learning Bank’s purpose was to help educators provide programs together that they otherwise could not provide alone. Some programs offered to community students includes an agricultural education program, a fine arts program, the career bank, a mentor network, and media sharing.

Mr. Linnell describes his experiences as a soldier in company C, Seventh Regiment, Minnesota Volunteers. He describes his educational background, family life, and business dealings. Mr. Linnell was elected to the State Legislature in the fall of 1880 and served two years in the House.

Thomas McGrath, a nationally known poet, was born at Sheldon, North Dakota. He joined the faculty of Moorhead State University in 1971 and served as Professor of English and Poet-in-Residence until retirement in 1982. Mr. McGrath was the recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship, Amy Lowell Traveling Poetry Scholarship, and a Guggenhiem Fellowship. His papers include correspondence, manuscripts, notes, poems, and movie scripts.

MACKALL, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1851-1935) AND MACKALL, HENRY CLINTON (1885-1977). PAPERS, 1865-1977. 4 ft. S2736
Benjamin Mackall was an early settler in Moorhead, Minnesota. He operated the first drug store and was a pharmacist for sixty-two years. This collection also includes the papers of B.F. Mackall's son, Henry Clinton, a prominent attorney in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This collection includes correspondence, awards, certificates, photographs, and family histories as well as originals and photocopies of letters from Mackall family members dated as early as 1716. Three diaries by B.F. Mackall are also included.

MASTERSON, E. J. ( -1935). FAMILY CORRESPONDENCE, 1895-1965. 7 in. S2677
This collection consists of correspondence among Masterson family members, including letters written by Maurice and Kenneth Masterson, twin brothers who served in the AEF during World War I. The bulk of the letters are from Maurice, who was killed in action in France in 1918. The Masterson family lived in Barnesville, Minnesota and later in Moorhead.

This is a reprint of six articles on Mr. Mellum's emigration from Norway which appeared in the Fergus Falls Daily Journal beginning on November 24, 1933. The account ran in a series of installments. Mellum was born in 1856 in Stange, Hedemarken, Norway and emigrated with his family in 1867. The account deals with Mellum's family background, his life in Norway, the trip from Norway to Minnesota, his experiences settling in Rushford and Otter Tail County in Minnesota, and the blizzard of January 7, 1873. Mellum was one of the pioneer settlers in Otter Tail County.

Over 250 black and white prints taken in 1976 as part of a planned documentary on migrant work in the Red River Valley. The project was never completed, and most of the prints are not identified in detail. An eight minute segment of color videotape, without sound, is also included in the collection of prints.

Records of the cooperative formed in 1972 by farmers in the southern part of the Red River Valley, for the purpose of building and operating a plant to process sugar beets into sugar. The records contain correspondence, minutes, research publications, annual reports and a variety of subject files concerning the cultivation and processing of sugar beets. The bulk of this collection is also available on microfilm.

The Non-Partisan Leader, which later became the National Leader, was published by the Non-Partisan League. The collection begins with the first issue of the Non-Partisan Leader in 1915 and goes through the last issue of the National Leader in 1923. The Non-Partisan Leader became the National Leader in November of 1921. A few miscellaneous items are also included.

Correspondence and miscellany of Henry G. Teigan, the league's secretary from 1916 to 1923, and other league officials; correspondence, financial records, and other materials of the Northwestern Service Bureau, which assisted local newspapers that supported the league. The bulk of the collection consists of Teigan's files, which provide information about the league's origin, growth, and decline; educational, organizational, and reform programs; relations with members; and publications. There is also data concerning opposition attacks, particularly in Minnesota during World War I; third-party politics, including the creation of the Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota; and the work of various reform groups in the Progressive era. Mr. Peterson managed and owned Peterson Truck Farms in Glyndon and was a leading agricultural innovator in Minnesota. During World War II the government made German prisoners of war available to work on his farm. Farm records include correspondence, farm building and equipment records, maps and photographs of fields, planting schedules, estate and income tax information, and photographs of and letters from German POW's. Mr. Probstfield came to Minnesota in 1852 and was an agent at the Hudson's Bay Company trading post at Georgetown, Minnesota. The roll of microfilm contains the journal entries and receipt records that he kept while an agent for Hudson's Bay, as well as some family records and diaries. This collection also includes the Probstfield diaries, notes, family photographs, and one piece of correspondence from Randolph's granddaughter. Other items include research papers regarding the Probstfield family. Three journals from this collection, dated 1873-1879, can be viewed at the Minnesota Digital Library website. In addition, a 1900 letter written by Probstfield, discussing property he lost during the 1862 Dakota Incident is of interest to that event and may be examined here.

The journal appears to be the official daily log of Henry H. Sibley's 1863 punitive expedition against the Dakota Indians from the time it left Camp Pope in Renville County, Minnesota, on June 16, until it returned to Fort Snelling on September 10. The journal was kept by an unspecified member of the expedition, but was frequently annotated in Henry H. Sibley's hand. (MHS Microfilm 333).

Microfilm of the records kept by David Thompson (1770-1857), explorer for the Hudson's Bay Company and the British government. Records include the notebooks and journals Thompson kept while exploring the Great Lakes area, the Columbia River basin, portions of the Rocky Mountains, and other parts of both the upper midwest of the United States and Great Britain's Canadian territories. Also included are the field books Thompson compiled and the maps he prepared while surveying the boundary between the United States and Canada under the Treaty of Ghent (1814). Three folders of correspondence between Thompson and various officials round out the collection. An inventory, created by the Archives of Ontario, where most of the Thompson originals are preserved, describes the collection in more detail.

Born in Norway in 1860, Mr. Thortvedt was one of the earliest settlers of the Red River Valley. The History written by him is an account of his covered wagon journey to the Valley in 1870. Papers also include newspaper clippings and a photograph.

Annual handbooks containing programs of the yearly gathering in Rollag, Minnesota, an event devoted to the display and restoration of steam-powered farm equipment. The handbooks also contain membership news about the Steam Threshers organization, articles about various pieces of equipment, and miscellaneous items about steam equipment.

Transcripts of testimony taken at the White Earth Reservation in 1911-1912, together with supporting documents and a report of an investigation, compiled by the Department of the Interior. The documents concern a dispute on the Reservation over the distribution of timber payments and which Chippewa (Ojibwa) were officially listed as members of the Reservation. The final report of the Department of the Interior on this investigation is in the US Serial Set, 62nd Congress, 3rd Session, House Report 1336. (MHS Microfilm 444).

The Woodman Lodge was located in Hitterdal and was part of a larger organization, The Modern Woodman of America. This lodge began in 1920 as Camp 1542. The records include by-laws, rituals, transfer records, membership lists, and death notices.

This collection contains five booklets which were compiled through the Minnesota WPA Writers Project. Three booklets relate to county histories (Kittson, Marshall, Otter Tail), another deals with the Judicial Districts of Minnesota, and the last booklet is an inventory of World War I emergency activities in Minnesota.
