Lead with Purpose: Sustainability in Project Management

In today’s job market, organizations are searching for project managers who can do more than meet deadlines and control budgets. They need leaders who understand how business decisions impact people, communities, and the environment. That’s why Minnesota State Moorhead has added a new Sustainability Emphasis to its #1 nationally ranked Project Management program. Students can now learn how to lead projects that create long-term value for both businesses and society.

“We added a sustainability emphasis to our Project Management program because the world, and the job market, is changing quickly,” says Josh Behl, program coordinator. “More and more organizations are prioritizing environmental responsibility, social impact, and long-term value.”

What Is a Sustainability Emphasis in Project Management?

The Sustainability Emphasis teaches students to view every project through a sustainability lens. That means thinking critically about how each phase of the project lifecycle affects not just the bottom line, but also the environment and the people involved.

Students learn to apply the P5 Standard from GPM Global (Green Project Management), a leading framework that integrates sustainable thinking into project planning and execution.

“It’s not just about deadlines and budgets anymore. It’s about making sure projects are designed with people and the planet in mind,” Behl says. “It’s about leading with intention and managing with integrity.”

The Sustainability Emphasis is a 15-credit addition to the Project Management degree, including 9 credits of required courses and 6 elective credits. It’s designed to fit seamlessly into the existing degree plan, so students can graduate on time without adding extra semesters.

Why Sustainability Matters in Project Management

Demand for green project management, sustainable business practices, and socially responsible leadership are on the rise. Companies across sectors are under pressure to meet environmental goals, adopt sustainable supply chains, and improve their impact on communities.

That’s why Moorhead’s Sustainability Emphasis prepares students to manage projects that align with both business goals and sustainability standards. Whether students plan to work in renewable energy, construction, manufacturing, healthcare, or agriculture, this emphasis gives them the tools to lead responsibly.

“Graduates who complete this emphasis bring something unique to the table. These are the kinds of professionals organizations want on their teams when they’re taking on complex challenges with high stakes for people and the planet,” says Behl.
