Foundation Board Member Feature: Jan Mahoney
Meet Jan Mahoney, an MSUM Foundation Board member and retired vice president of finance and administration. Jan’s Dragon pride runs deep and she has helped see many projects through at the university, including the addition of Scheels Field. In her spare time, she can often be found cruising the country on her Harley Davidson motorcycle.
When did you first become connected to MSUM?
I became familiar with MSUM through Minnesota State CFO conferences, the first being held in 1996. David Crockett, a retired VP of MSUM, told me I would be a good fit for the university so I kept a close watch on the position. I applied, interviewed and was honored to be named the new VP in 2010.
Why have you stayed connected to the University throughout the years?
There’s a little piece of my heart that is imbedded with a Dragon. I strongly believe in the mission, vision and values of MSUM and continue to possess passion for all that they do.
What’s one thing that surprised you about MSUM?
The feeling of family, in addition to the generosity of alumni, the generosity of current and retired faculty and staff.
What inspires you to give back to the university with your time and talent?
My tenure at MSUM was the most rewarding of my career. I believe I left the university in a better place and I want to continue to make a difference.
What experiences at MSUM have influenced your life the most?
As the VP overseeing Athletics (without any prior career exposure to an athletic department), I came to understand that impactful athletic programs can not only contribute to the success of student athletes, but also the success of the university.
How do you hope to support MSUM and/or students with your philanthropic involvement?
As a board member, I hope to assist in building momentum for the future. I hope that my contributions will assist students in achieving their dreams.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
Over a six-year period of time, I toured the lower 48 states on my Harley Davidson Road King.
What’s the best advice you were ever given?
“Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”
Where’s your favorite on-campus meeting place?
The President’s box at Scheels Field.
What personal or professional achievement are you most proud of?
Personally, I am most proud of my two sons and their families. Professionally, I am most proud of the assistance I provided in making Scheels Field a reality. It takes a village.
