Science teacher makes waves through kindness, respect, and determination

Life Science Teacher Jake Pundsack is the youngest recipient of Minnesota's Science Teaching Award, which recognizes exemplary secondary science teaching. He has also won multiple district teaching awards and has doubled the standardized science test scores in Melrose, but these accomplishments are not what he is most proud of. "I am proudest of the growth I get to be a part of in my students, whether it's passion, skills, or character," Jake says.

His students are excited about science, with many going on to pursue careers in STEM. Jake, the only openly gay teacher in his school district, has also sparked a positive shift in community perspective toward LGBTQIA+ people after his car was vandalized with hateful messages in 2023. Rather than pursuing legal action, he used the moment to promote kindness, growth, and understanding. The community followed his lead, showing support and acceptance for all people.

As founder of the MSUM speech team, he brought his passion to Melrose. Under his leadership, the speech team has produced seven state champions and two national finalists and achieved a historic seventh-place finish at the national convention—unprecedented for a Class A Minnesota speech team.

Jake also actively serves his community, volunteering at Hope Blooms, Feed My Starving Children, The Welcome Table, Loaves and Fishes, and Spread the Word>>Inclusion. He also established the Melrose Prism Club, an organization for LGBTQIA+ students to feel valued and supported.

"I faced considerable adversity, but instead of shying away from the wake of hatred, I led my community to be more loving, respectful, and kind," Jake says.

Jake Pundsack has been selected as one of Minnesota State University Moorhead's 10 Under 10 award recipients.
