Building a Legacy of Leadership

Tony Grindberg has spent his career like an architect; laying the foundation for growth, building connections, and designing a stronger future for the region and the state of North Dakota. This year, Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) proudly recognizes his lasting contributions by awarding him the Distinguished Alumni Award, one of the university’s highest honors.

Reflecting on the recognition, Grindberg expresses both gratitude and humility.

“It's very humbling to even be recognized for the honor,” says the 1985 Business Administration graduate.

Grindberg’s career has been defined by his leadership in economic development and public service. Currently serving as the North Dakota Director for Xcel Energy, he has spent decades working to create opportunities that encourage professionals to build their careers in the region rather than seek opportunities elsewhere. His early work with the Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation (GFMEDC) and leadership in establishing the NDSU Research & Technology Park were key in shaping the area’s economic landscape.

“Many of the folks that I went to school with graduated and left, and that was a major challenge for our economy,” Grindberg recalls.

Grindberg spent nearly two decades encouraging the growth and expansion of business in the region, developing more opportunities to keep talent in Fargo-Moorhead. The metro is now the regional hub of multiple industries, ranging from medical to manufacturing. Grindberg’s work played a major role in the growth of the local economy. A GFMEDC study shows it grew more than 180% from 2001-21 – more than three times than national average in that span.

Grindberg’s impact extends beyond his economic development efforts. For more than 28 years, he has served in elected office, including as a North Dakota State Senator, Fargo City Commissioner, and currently as a Cass County Commissioner. In each role, he has championed policies to strengthen education, expand workforce training, and promote business investment. Among his notable achievements include creating the research park environment for 900 technology jobs and leading a $20 million public-private investment campaign establishing a career center, an initiative designed to bridge K-12 education and workforce development.

Grindberg’s passion for service was shaped early on by his parents, both of whom were deeply involved in public service. His father served as a city councilman and mayor for 24 years, while his mother dedicated 12 years to the local school board. Growing up in a household where civic engagement was a way of life, Grindberg developed an innate sense of responsibility to his community.

That foundation was solidified at MSUM through a lesson from one of his instructors, Dr. Evelyn Larson. While balancing full-time work, including overnight shifts at a hotel, he occasionally dozed off in her class. Instead of reprimanding him, Larson checked in, sparking a conversation that left a lasting impact.

"Her advice really was to get involved in your community. That really stuck with me throughout my career. It's important to start your career and develop your skills as a professional in business, it's also important you give back and be involved in the community."

That simple yet powerful message became a guiding principle for Grindberg. Over the years, he has volunteered with organizations such as the Plains Art Museum, the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce, Greater Fargo Moorhead Economic Development Corporation, Dakota Medical Foundation and the Big Brother - Big Sister program.

“Find your passion by getting involved and helping organizations and volunteering. Expand your network to help you mature as an individual and gain confidence," says the longtime public servant.

As he looks ahead, Grindberg believes institutions like MSUM will play an integral role in addressing evolving workforce challenges.

"The more connections higher education makes, the more opportunity that young people move to our area and then determine that it's a great quality life."

For current students and young professionals, Grindberg offers up a piece of advice quite similar to the one he received years ago. Take risks, get involved, and be willing to learn from mistakes.

Through his leadership, service, and commitment to his community, Grindberg has proven himself to be a master builder; not of structures, but of opportunities, growth, and lasting impact. His journey from student to influential leader serves as an inspiration to future generations of Dragons looking to design their own legacies.
