Dragons March On
As I write this, MSUM’s men’s basketball team is eight hours away from defending its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Tournament title. By the time this column is published, the outcome of the game—in which the Dragons will play the University of Minnesota Duluth—will be known. Regardless of the outcome, the Dragons will almost certainly head to the NCAA Division II Championships by virtue of their record during the regular season.
The success of our men’s basketball team has understandably garnered considerable media attention. Meanwhile, out of the spotlight for the most part, our track and field athletes have also been enjoying a noteworthy postseason. At the NSIC Indoor Championships last weekend, a number of Dragons took first place in their events. They look forward to competing at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Virginia Beach on March 10 and 11.
Conference champions include senior Shyrone Kemp (above left), who won the men's triple jump for the fourth consecutive season. Shyrone has qualified for the 2023 NCAA Championships in both the triple jump and the long jump.
Junior Braxton Bruer (above middle) placed first in the 800m run. He also joined teammates Kendrick Major, Adnew Stueven, and Jared Gregoire (team below left) in winning the distance medley, breaking the conference record in the process. In addition to his contribution to the medley team, freshman Jared Gregoire (above right) won his first individual conference title in the 100m run.
On the women’s team, two Dragons have qualified for the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Ashley Hokanson (above center) won the NSIC Conference title in the pole vault and holds the top vault in all of Division II this season, while Junior Robbyn Rolle-Curry (above right) has qualified in both the 400m run and the 200m run.
These student-athletes are worth cheering for—both on and off the playing field.
