Program Notes
Songs Without Words
Felix Mendelssohn was a German composer and pianist from the early Romantic period. This piece stems from his collection of forty-eight piano pieces entitled Songs Without Words. The lyrical, melodious nature of these pieces rely on the phrase shaping and tone of the performer to bring them to life.
Deux Arabesques, No. I
Claude Debussy was an influential 19th century French composer known for his impressionistic style. Deux Arabesques, No. I wanders through multiple modes and keys to create a dreamlike state, similar to the visual art of French Impressionism.
Valerie
This Dave McCabe composition was covered by Amy Winehouse on her album Back To Black. Winehouse was an English singer-songwriter known for her expressive lower vocal range and unique musical style encompassing soul, rhythm and blues, reggae, and jazz.
Thank You For The Memories
Written out of a place of gratitude for the incredible people in my life, this song encompasses the joy one feels in the presence of someone they love. To all my friends and family that have impacted my life these past four years, this is for you. Thank you.
I’m on Fire
The performance of this Bruce Springsteen song is inspired by a cover version by The Staves, an English indie-folk trio. I was inspired by their harmonic and melodic approach to a classic tune.
Wild Child
When I sit down to write a song, I almost always start with lyrics. I attribute this to my mother and our shared love of writing. Written first as a poem and later put to music, this song is a short and sweet message of hopeful understanding to someone going through a tough time.
Chance To Change
Growth amidst change has been a common theme in my writing this year. Reflecting on the struggles that arise in navigating relationships in an ever-changing world, I wanted to express the importance of showing up for one another and learning to grow as you go.
Use Somebody
Kings of Leon are a multi-platinum, Grammy winning rock band hailing from Nashville, Tennessee. Their song Use Somebody has allowed me to explore a different part of my vocal register and capabilities.
Nobody’s Stopping You Now
Lake Street Dive is a multi-genre band founded in 2004 from Boston, Massachusetts. Lead singer Rachael Price wrote this tune as a “letter of encouragement to her teenage self” after overcoming personal barriers and allowing herself to realize her dreams in music.
Another Me
I experienced a heavy fog of writer’s block this past year. The more I wrote, the more the process felt like a chore. This song was a breath of fresh air for me. Coming from a place of frustration, this song also embraces the theme of growth amidst change and knowing when to take a step back. Heavily influenced by folk rock singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, the lyrical and stylistic aspects of this song made it so much fun to write and reminded me of the joy found in the creative process.
Have You Ever Seen The Rain
John Fogerty was the lead singer of classic rock band, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Released as a single from their Pendulum album in 1970, this tune has stood the test of time and remains a standard in the repertoire of countless bands across the country today.

Special Thanks
This recital would not have been possible without the support of several others. To my professors, thank you for pushing me to be the best version of myself and supporting my goals in and out of the classroom. To my friends and family that have been a constant source of support and encouragement, I would not be who I am without you. Finally, to Ryan Cofer, Elizabeth Evert-Karnes, Melissa Howard, and my advisor, Dr. Strait, thank you for all of your help behind the scenes in planning this special night. Your time and support is highly appreciated!
