Historical Sketch

The Red River Chapter of the National Organization for Women was organized in 1974. The ratification of the ERA in the state of North Dakota was the Chapter’s first goal. The following years have been devoted to public education on feminist issues. The chapter held public meetings on rape, women in the criminal justice system and women and the law. The woman and arts program was first held in 1974 and has become an annual event. Red River NOW has taken direct action in discrimination and harassment complaints.

The records of the Red River Chapter of NOW are arranged by subject, alphabetically, and chronologically within the subject. Included in the records are by-laws, correspondence, the Red River Chapter history and statement of purpose, conference material, meeting notices, newsletters, press releases, task force material, reports, one scrapbook, newspaper clippings, program agendas, photographs, and six cassette tapes, two of which are from the National NOW.
