Historical Sketch

The Prairie Home Cemetery Association was founded in 1875. It used land granted for cemetery purposes by the Lake Superior and Puget Sound Company, a townsite development company of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The Riverside Cemetery Association was apparently organized in 1884. The minutes of the Prairie Home Cemetery Association’s Secretary’s Record indicate that by 1887 the association was making arrangements to use land owned by the Riverside Cemetery Association. The records also indicate that by 1929 the two associations had formally merged. Because the records are incomplete, the exact date of the merger is not known.

Collection Description

This collection consists of one reel of microfilm plus hard copies for some of the journals. The microfilm edition contains the records of the Prairie Home and Riverside Cemetery Association, Moorhead, Clay County, Minnesota.

The interment records contain the name of each person buried in the cemetery; date of birth and death and/or age; date of burial; cause of death; and the location of the grave. The records for the period 1929-1975 also include place of birth and death; sex; color; marital status; name of undertaker or funeral director; and name of nearest friend or relative.
