Historical Sketch

The Recipient Families United for Justice (RFUJ) was a state-wide [Minnesota] organization created by a citizens group in Minneapolis in 1984. The organization was staffed and directed by volunteers, individuals representing families who were receiving social assistance, individuals engaged in social work professions, religious organizations and educational institutions. Among the goals of the organization were to act as an advocacy group with state and local agencies in the fight against poverty, to provide information about programs and services to families receiving social assistance, to provide access to counseling and other assistance for families, and to create avenues for political empowerment.

RFUJ established local contacts with several Minnesota communities, but its core membership remained largely in the Twin Cities area. The organization remained active through the mid and latter 1980s, and then disbanded around the end of the decade, partly because its functions were being carried out by other organizations. 

Collection Description

This small collection was donated by a Moorhead resident who acted as a regional contact person for RFUJ. The collection consists of records of the RFUJ Board of Directors, minutes of board meetings, correspondence between the board and local organizations and individuals, records on grant-seeking, promotional literature, a short-lived newsletter published by the organization in 1985, and some office records. Most of the materials are in excellent condition.
