Arlan Stangeland Legislation Papers (S4930)

Biographical Sketch

Arlan Ingehart Stangeland was born in Fargo, North Dakota in 1930. His family moved to Moorhead, Minnesota, graduating in 1948. He became a farmer in Wilkin County, Minnesota, gradually becoming active in Minnesota politics. He was a delegate to the State Republican Convention from 1964 to 1968, and was elected to the Minnesota Legislature in 1966 as a representative for the Barnesville area. He served in the House of Representatives through 1978.

In 1977, Robert Bergland, U.S. Representative for Minnesota District 7, resigned his office to become U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. Stangeland was elected in a special election to serve the remainder of Bergland’s term, and won the seat in the next regular election of 1978. Stangeland subsequently served six full terms in the Congress until 1990. As a regular member of the House Agriculture Committee, Stangeland was most active in a number of issues concerning faming, and gave his support to several farming bills. After losing his bid for re-election in 1990, Stangeland became active in lobbying work in Washington, D.C.

Collection Description

The records in the collection consist of the files kept in Stangeland’s Moorhead office. The bulk of the files contain detailed correspondence and information on projects supported by federal aid and legislation within various communities of the 7th Congressional District. Also in the collection are several subject files on various national political issues of the 1980’s, election files, Stangeland’s voting records, and files containing copies of federal bills, sponsored or co-sponsored by the Congressman. All records are in excellent condition.
