Center for Engaged Learning

  • The MSUM Center for Engaged Learning is home to four offices that create opportunities for experiential learning and engagement between students, faculty and our community.

  • Center for Engaged Learning Offices
Community Engagement creates connections with local organizations, schools and businesses to provide opportunities for students, faculty and staff to engage with and support the local community through a variety of events, activities and volunteering. It also organizes and leads two summer camp programs - College for Kids & Teens and Scrubs Camp.
The Honors Program is for high-achieving students who want to make the most of their undergraduate education. Students choose from a variety of courses, events and experiences, and much of the coursework also counts toward general education requirements/LASC. Invitations to join the Honors Program are sent to entering freshmen based on automatic eligibility requirements. Transfer students and upperclassmen can also apply to join. The program currently involves nearly 200 students with majors from every college.
The ability to take part in individually mentored research and creative activity is one of the unique advantages that MSUM offers to students. MSUM showcases student work through the annual Student Academic Conference. Other undergraduate research activities include the Lab Crawl, where more than a dozen faculty open their labs for tours, and the Scholars Apprentice Program, which matches students with faculty supervisors for one-on-one mentored research.
Service Learning is a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students participate in organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflects on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility. Service learning provides real-life experiences by linking students with local communities and service providers.
As an institution, MSUM is committed to contributing to Moorhead and the surrounding communities in meaningful ways. Community engagement is a key part of our strategic anchor to be indispensable to the communities we serve.
